This week as part of our History learning, we have been finding out about The Great Fire of London.  We placed the fire on our class timeline and discussed pictures and paintings of the Fire.  We composed questions and talked about where, when and why the fire started.

This week, we started to visit the computer suite in Key Stage 2. Each week half of the class will do an activity in the suite.  This week we have been learning how to use a mouse to control the computer - a tricky skill to master!

Reading

This week we will be asking you to do the "second" read of your child's phonic reading book at home.  They will do the "first" read as a group in school.  We will then do the "third" read with your child at school next week so that we can focus on developing your child's understanding of the text including their use of inference, explanation and prediction.  It is therefore really important for your child to read their allocated Bug Club book at home in order for them to fully participate in the session at school.  Please see your child's reading log for further information on our "Three read approach" to teaching reading".

Phonics

In Phonics this week we  have started to revisit our first set of Phase 5 graphemes to develop our confidence in reading and writing words with these sounds.  This week we have revisited ph and wh. You might like to play the games on Bug club which practise these sounds.

Maths

In Maths this week we have consolidated our use of part whole models to show the relationship between addition and subtraction (see below).

2+3 = 5
3+2 = 5
5-2 = 3
5-3 =2

  Friday 22nd September This week we have been visited by Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre.  We had an amazing class talk with the birds' keeper, then experienced a flying session in the hall.  The children were very excited to see such incredible birds up close.  This visit was to develop the children's science learning in relation to animals and how animals move, feed and sense their environment to survive. Reading Challenge This week we are sending home the first part of the Year One reading challenge.  The aim of this challenge is to increase your child's confidence and fluency through regular daily reading at home.  Please record only one book for each day on the card - although of course if your child would like to read more that would be great!  Friday 15th September This week we have recapped all our basic rights. All children have the right to food, water, home, family, play and the right to learn. This week we have started our 'Feathered Friends' learning journey.  The children have identified different types of animals- mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles and fish. We have been on a walk in the woods, spotting different types of birds.  We have also read some information and watched some clips to find out about different types of birds. Phonics This week we have started to recap phase 4.    Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely summer.  We are so pleased with how well the children have settled back into school. This week we have found out about the 'UN convention on the rights of the child' (UNCRC) Here is a link for parents about the UNCRC.                                                UNCRC The children have found out about their right to families, food, home, water and play. Over the next few weeks the children will develop their own 'class charter' based on the UNCRC and their rights. Please see parent mail for key information.
