Friday 26 th September

 Friday 26th September

Thank you for ensuring that your child is arriving promptly at school.  It has made such a difference in each class to the start of the school day.

In science this week we have been learning that animals need food to survive, and that food gives them energy to move and material to grow. The children have learnt that all animals are different and so eat different foods. Some only eat plants (herbivores), some eat other animals (carnivores) and some eat both (omnivores).

A predator is an animal that hunts, kills and eats other animals.

Prey is an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.

The children have used this information and vocabulary to make a simple food chain.
You might like to watch the food chain video below.

 We have allocated the book "Rabbits" to share together on Bug Club to practise the language introduced above.

Reading Challenge

Last week we sent home the first part of the Year One reading challenge.  The aim of this challenge is to increase your child's confidence and fluency through regular daily reading at home.  Please record only one book for each day on the card - although of course if your child would like to read more that would be great! At the end of each part of the challenge your child will receive a special pin badge to wear on their school jumper.
Please can you keep your child's reading log in their book bag so that their teacher can complete it when they have read with your child. Thank you!

Maths

In Maths this week we have been counting forwards and backwards to 30 and identifying the position of numbers on structured and blank numberlines.  We have been explaining how we know the position of numbers e.g. "I know the missing number is 15 because 15 is one less than 16."  We practised writing our numbers on numberlines the correct way around. We used the rekenreks to subitise amounts to 10 - pushing an amount of beads in one go without counting them.

Phonics

This week in Phonics we finished revisiting phase 4 - reading and writing longer words using the phase 3 phonemes. See below for examples;

We also practised reading our phase 4 tricky words. These are words that the children are taught to recognise by sight. See below;

Volunteers
If you can spare anytime to support reading in Year One this year, we would love to hear from you.  This would involve hearing children read on a one to one level.  Please let us know when you are available on
year1@whiteleyapps.com
Many thanks!
