Friday 19th January

 Friday 19th January

This week at school we had a fantastic visit from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.  We learnt about the job of a firefighter. We learnt how to check our smoke alarms were working. We were set the challenge to find the smoke alarms in our house and to ask our adults to check them once a week.  We learnt how to make a 999 call.  You might like to ask your child to practise their address as many did not know their house number or name of their road when role playing this activity.
As part of our science learning this week, we investigated which materials would burn. We then applied our learning to help understand why the Great fire of London spread so quickly.
In Art, we have started to respond to the work of Jan Griffier who painted pictures of the Great Fire of London.  We have been practising mixing colours for our own paintings of the Great Fire.

Reading

Again this week we will be asking you to do the "second" read of your child's phonic reading book at home.  They will do the "first" read as a group in school.  We will then do the "third" read with your child at school next week so that we can focus on developing your child's understanding of the text including their use of inference, explanation and prediction.  It is therefore really important for your child to read their allocated Bug Club book at home in order for them to fully participate in the session at school.  Please see your child's reading log for further information on our "Three read approach".

We thank you for your support with this.

Phonics
In Phonics this week we  have continued to revisit our Phase 5 graphemes to develop our confidence in reading and writing words with these sounds.  This week we have revisited alternative graphemes for the ee digraphThese include ea, e_e, ey, y and ie.
You might like to play the games on Bug club which practise these sounds.

Maths
This week in maths we have been learning to partition 2 digit numbers into tens and units and to record this as a number sentence e.g. 27 = 20 + 7

Library Books
Please can you check for any library books at home and return them to school.
Many thanks.
