Phonics
The National Phonics Screening check is only 3 weeks away now! We are nearly there!
Thank you for your work at home with your child in practising reading real and "alien" words. We are really noticing an increase in the reading confidence of children who are practising these at home.
Please can you practise reading the real and "alien" words on the orange sheet sent home with your child each week. Encourage them to draw on the sound buttons, then to carefully say each sound and then to blend the sounds together to read each word. We have put the sound buttons on the words on one side of the paper so that you know where they need to go! In the Phonics reading check, the children will be asked to put the sound buttons on each word independently. Mrs Robinson has made the video below to show you how the sounds are pronounced and blended.
This week in Phonics we have revisited alternative graphemes for "j", these are "g" (as in page or giant) and "dge" as in "bridge". It would be great if you could practise these sounds by playing the allocated games and reading this week's allocated books "Different homes", "Madge and the beanstalk" and "Giant George and the Robin".
Thank you!
English
In English this week we have written our own instructions for planting seeds using imperative (bossy!) verbs e.g. push, dig and time adverbials e.g. first, next, after that.
Computing
This week in computing, we programmed the Beebots to move to and from different points on our Beebot maps. When our Beebot didn't move in the right direction we "debugged" our programs to correct them. It would be great if you could reinforce the directions of left and right with your child.
Your child might like to practise this at home by using the free app above for Apple or Android devices.
Science
This week at school we looked at the results of our seed investigation. We discussed which items had grown and therefore which were seeds! We wrote our own science conclusions.
We have also set up a science investigation to find out what plants need to grow well. We are exploring the effects of light, temperature and water on their growth.
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been learning to count in multiples of 5 to at least 100. We used this skill to solve simple multiplication problems e.g. if there are 5 pencils in a box and I have 6 boxes, how many pencils are there altogether?
It would be great if you could practise counting in 5s at home. Try counting different numbers of 5p pieces to find the total.
