Friday 1st May
Phonics
Thank you for your work at home with your child in practising reading real and "alien" words. We are really noticing an increase in the confidence of children who are practising these at home.
This activity is to support your child in becoming more confident in recalling and then blending the sounds that they have learnt at school so far. In the week beginning 8th June your child will be doing the Statutory National Phonics screening check which checks their confidence in blending phonic sounds.
Please can you practise reading the real and "alien" words on the orange sheet sent home with your child each week. Encourage them to draw on the sound buttons, then to carefully say each sound and then to blend the sounds together to read each word. We have put the sound buttons on the words on one side of the paper so that you know where they need to go! Mrs Robinson has made the video below to show you how the sounds are pronounced and blended.
This week in Phonics we have learnt an alternative grapheme for "c" this is 'ch' (as in "anchor"). We have also revisited alternative graphemes for "s", these are soft "c" - "c(y)" - cycle, "c(e)" - nice and "c(i)" - pencil, "st" - castle, "sc" - scissors and "se" - horse. You can practise these sounds using the games on Bug Club and reading the books "Kat's Great Act", "Dressed for the Job", "Hungry Birds" and "Go-Kart, Go!".
Thank you!
Maths
In Maths this week we have been learning to compare objects using mass or weight. We found objects which had a heavier, lighter or equal mass to an object. We ordered objects from heaviest to lightest and used non-standard units (cubes) to find the mass of different objects. We learnt to use balance scales carefully and accurately to help us with this task.
You might like to choose some objects at home and order them from heaviest to lightest.
We are now counting forwards and backwards to 100. Try the games below to support this.English
In English, we read, followed and ordered instructions for planting seeds. We learnt about the features of instructions including numbers, time adverbials and imperative (bossy) verbs. We have all planted our own seed to look after at school.
