Friday 9th January

Welcome back to school.  We hope that you enjoyed the Christmas break together.  Please can you ensure that your child brings named gloves and a hat to school every day as they spend a lot of time learning and playing outside.

This week as part of our History learning, we have been finding out about The Great Fire of London.  We placed the fire on our class timeline and discussed pictures and paintings of the Fire.  We composed questions and talked about where, when and why the fire started.

Reading

This week we will be asking you to do the "second" read of your child's phonic reading book at home.  They will do the "first" read as a group in school.  We will then do the "third" read with your child at school next week so that we can focus on developing your child's understanding of the text including their use of inference, explanation and prediction.  It is therefore really important for your child to read their allocated Bug Club book at home in order for them to fully participate in the session at school.  Please see your child's reading log for further information on our "Three read approach" to teaching reading". Please see the sticker in your child's reading log for the name of the book to read.

We thank you for your support with this. It makes such a difference to your child's progress in reading.

Phonics

In Phonics we have learnt the alternative graphemes for ur.

ir (girl), er (ladder) and ear (learn).

We have also allocated some games on Bug Club to practise reading and spelling words with these sounds.

If you fancy an extra read to practise the alternative "ur" graphemes above, we have allocated the books below;

The Third Whirligig and Sunflowers

Maths

In Maths this week we have consolidated our use of part whole models to show the relationship between addition and subtraction (see below).

2+3 = 5
3+2 = 5
5-2 = 3

5-3 =2
