This week at school we have been looking at the work of Botanical artists and discussing how they carefully look at real plants and draw what they can see.  We made our own botanical drawings of plants that grow around our school and mixed colours to paint them.
In science we learnt about the parts of a plant and how they help the plant to survive.  We learnt about the roles of the leaf, flower, stem and roots.
We set up an investigation to discover if bean seeds can grow upside down!
We have started to look at books with moving pictures for our Design Technology project.  If your child has any books with moving pictures that they would like to share with the class please send them into school.

We started our English unit of work about Jack and the Beanstalk sharing the version below and acting it out with our friends.
Phonics
The National Phonics screening check will be taking place next week in school.  This will assess your child's blending skills using real and alien words. You will receive your child's results as part of their end of year report. Please see Mrs Robinson's video below to see how to blend this weeks alien words.

Maths
In Maths this week we have been working with numbers to 100 and partitioning them into tens and units.  
We are working on developing the children's confidence and fluency when mentally solving addition and subtraction calculations.

 Friday 5th September   Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely summer.  We are so pleased with how well the children have settled back into school. Thursday 13th February

 Thursday 13th February     Waterstones walk - Thursday 6th March We have been invited to Waterstones in Whiteley to spend our World Book Day vouchers and share a story.   We will be walking to Waterstones in the morning on Thursday 7th March.  We would be very grateful if any parents or carers could volunteer to support us in our walk down to Whiteley. Many thanks! This week we have been carrying out our Design Technology unit of work, where we learnt about creating stable structures.  We explored construction kits and materials including straws, pipe cleaners, wooden sticks and elastic bands.  We learnt how to join materials to make stable, free standing shapes.  We then designed and made our own tent frame, after talking about how in 1666 people had to live in tents after the Great Fire.  Friday 24th January This week at school we had a fantastic visit from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.  We learnt about the job of a firefighter. We learnt how to check our smoke alarms were working. We were set the challenge to find the smoke alarms in our house and to ask our adults to check them once a week.  We learnt how to make a 999 call.  You might like to ask your child to practise their address as many did not know their house number or name of their road when role playing this activity. English and History This week in English we have written simple recounts of the events of the Great fire of London and made our own non-fiction fact books about the Great Fire. We were really proud of the way the children wrote simple sentences with straightforward subject/verb agreement.
