Friday 9th May
Phonics
Thank you for your work at home with your child in practising reading real and "alien" words. We are really noticing an increase in the confidence of children who are practising this at home.
This activity is to support your child in becoming more confident in recalling and then blending the sounds that they have learnt at school so far. In the week beginning 9th June your child will be doing the Statutory National Phonics screening check which checks their confidence in blending phonic sounds.
Please can you practise reading the real and "alien" words on the orange sheet sent home with your child each week. Encourage them to draw on the sound buttons, then to carefully say each sound and then to blend the sounds together to read each word. We have put the sound buttons on the words on one side of the paper so that you know where they need to go! Mrs Robinson has made the video below to show you how the sounds are pronounced and blended.
This week in Phonics we have revisited the alternative "ai", "ea" and "igh" graphemes and practised reading and writing words with these sounds. This week please continue to read your choice of books from Bug Club. Reading the books on Bug Club and the paper books brought home helps practise the sounds we have learnt in Year One. This will support your child in their Statutory National Phonics screening check as well as making them a more confident and fluent reader!
Thank you!
Science
This week at school we looked at the results of our seed investigation. We discussed which items had grown and therefore which were seeds! We wrote our own science conclusions.
We have also set up a science investigation to find out what plants need to grow well. We are exploring the effects of light, temperature and water on their growth.
English
This week, we started to learn about instruction writing. We read instructions for planting a seed and picked out the key features - imperative verbs e.g. "Dig" and "Push" and time adverbials e.g. "First" and "Next". We then planted our own seeds, following the instructions.
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been learning to count in multiples of 5 to at least 100. We used this skill to solve simple multiplication problems e.g. if there are 5 pencils in a box and I have 6 boxes, how many pencils are there altogether?
It would be great if you could practise counting in 5s at home. Try counting different numbers of 5p pieces to find the total.
