World Book Day Next Week- Thursday 6th March 

On this day we will be walking to Waterstones to spend our World book day voucher and listen to a story.

We are very short of volunteers to accompany us to Waterstones on Thursday morning.  Please can you let us know if you can support us.  Each class has only had one volunteer so far.

On World book day please can your child bring in their favourite book to share with the class.  

This week we have started our history learning about the Titanic.  We have approached this from the point of view of a passenger - Delia McDermott who travelled on the Titanic as a third class passenger.  Delia bought a new hat for her journey and we discussed the differences between the clothes worn by different groups of people, rich and poor in 1912.  We discussed how the lives of rich and poor people were very different in 1912.  Next week we will learn more about how Delia travelled on the Titanic and what happened next.
Science

This week we continued our science longitudinal investigation - finding out about the animals that live in our pond at the end of winter and the beginning of spring.  We discussed how this had changed from our findings in the autumn.
Phonics

In Phonics this week we  have continued to revisit our Phase 5 graphemes to develop our confidence in reading and writing words with these sounds.  This week we have revisited alternative graphemes for the "oo" digraph. These include u, oul, u_e, ew and ue. 
You might like to play the games on Bug club which practise these sounds.
If you would like an extra read to practise the sounds above, we have allocated the books below to Bug Club;
The Moonsnoop, Unlucky! and Bullfrog is the Best.

Maths 
We have continued our work counting in 2s and 10s and solving problems using this knowledge e.g. If there are 10 bikes, how many wheels will they have?  We sorted groups of objects into 2s and described our sets saying how many "lots of" 2 we had and how many altogether.

Class Performances
In Year One our class performances are in the spring term at 2pm.
The dates are as follows;
1H - Monday 24th March
1J - Tuesday 25th March
1R - Thursday 27th March

 Friday 24th January This week at school we had a fantastic visit from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.  We learnt about the job of a firefighter. We learnt how to check our smoke alarms were working. We were set the challenge to find the smoke alarms in our house and to ask our adults to check them once a week.  We learnt how to make a 999 call.  You might like to ask your child to practise their address as many did not know their house number or name of their road when role playing this activity. English and History This week in English we have written simple recounts of the events of the Great fire of London and made our own non-fiction fact books about the Great Fire. We were really proud of the way the children wrote simple sentences with straightforward subject/verb agreement.  Thursday 13th February     Waterstones walk - Thursday 6th March We have been invited to Waterstones in Whiteley to spend our World Book Day vouchers and share a story.   We will be walking to Waterstones in the morning on Thursday 7th March.  We would be very grateful if any parents or carers could volunteer to support us in our walk down to Whiteley. Many thanks! This week we have been carrying out our Design Technology unit of work, where we learnt about creating stable structures.  We explored construction kits and materials including straws, pipe cleaners, wooden sticks and elastic bands.  We learnt how to join materials to make stable, free standing shapes.  We then designed and made our own tent frame, after talking about how in 1666 people had to live in tents after the Great Fire.
