Special Request
We will be starting our weaving unit of Art in a few weeks time.  If you have any ribbons (paper or fabric), fabric or Christmas paper that you would be able to donate, we would be very grateful.
Art
This week we have continued to be inspired by the work of the artist Barbara Rae. We have created our own paintings in the style of the artist.  We created a background for our painting using a wash of dark and light colours and sketched an Arctic animal to go on the foreground.
Computing
In Computing we have been using the App "I can animate" to create our own simple animations using Arctic animals.
 English
We have read the story of "Iris and Isaac" by Catherine Rayner.
We discussed the adjectives used to describe the different Arctic settings.  Next week we will be using adjectives to describe our own Arctic settings.
Geography
In Geography this week we learnt about hot and cold places in the world.  We identified the Equator and learnt how hot places in the world are nearer to the Equator and cold places are further away.
Maths
In Maths this week we have been representing numbers to 20 and beyond on a 20 frame and identifying the number of tens and units in 2 digit numbers.  We identified the number that was one more or one less than a given number.
Lots of the children in Year 1 are still writing their numbers back to front or reversing their digits e.g. writing 31 for the number thirteen.  It would be great if you could work on this at home to support your child's learning in school.

Phonics

In Phonics we have learnt the alternative graphemes for or.  

au (launch), aw (claw) and al (walk). 

Please can we again ask that you make sure you read the allocated Bug Club book this week with your child to practise the new digraphs and new tricky words 'because' and 'work'.  This makes such a difference to how your child remembers and applies this new learning in class. Please see the sticker in your child's reading log for the name of the book to read.

Christmas Cards
In Year One we encourage the children to make one Christmas card for the class rather than give out lots of individual cards.
This means that we can really value your child's card and message and share it with the class and it is more sustainable for our environment too.

  Friday 4th October Maths This week in Maths we have been learning to represent groups using  whole/part models and number sentences - see image above.  We have worked on solving simple problems e.g. There are 2 birds in the tree, how many more birds do we need to make 5? Try the games below 1 more game adding to 10 game Phonics In Phonics this week we have spent our last week consolidating Phase 4 Phonics - words with adjacent consonants and phase 4 tricky words. Next week we will be starting to learn the new Phase 5 digraphs wh and ph.  Thank you for working on the reading challenge at home with your child.  We are noticing such a difference in the confidence of the children who are reading each day at home. Friday 13th September This week we have recapped all of our basic rights from  the 'United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child' (UNCRC). All children have the right to food, water, home, family, play and the right to learn. Science This week we have started our 'Feathered Friends' learning journey.  In school, the children identified different types of animals - mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles and fish.  We discussed the features of each type of animal. We have allocated 'Hungry Birds' to your child on Bug Club to share at home together and find out some facts and information about birds in preparation for our learning next week.
